My working method for my ongoing series, “Pugilism.” I place a large unstretched canvas on the ground centered under a heavy bag. I then pour paint onto the top of the bag and begin to strike. The paint records my punches and every movement I make. Some paint falls directly from bag to canvas, some splatters are the result of the impact of glove on bag, but the majority of the finished work comes from my footwork and the traces left from my body.
By the end, there is not simply paint on canvas. I am inside the canvas, and my violent actions are frozen into time. The painting serves as a record for this temporal event.
