Since, 2009, I’ve focused on architecture and the urban experience as the primary subject matter in my work, exploring these themes in mono-printmaking and digital photography.During a 2006 internship in Europe, I captured thousands of photographic images, mostly of modern structures. They were intended as a record of my travels and reference for my own design upon returning stateside.
Back in St. Louis in 2009, I discovered for the first time the urban blight and destruction of whole communities across vast swaths of North St. Louis. Finding interesting compositions and strangeness in this cityscape I photographed many once functional if not beautiful structures.
Sometime later, by accident, I started to notice similarities in the two bodies of documentation. While there were differences in the conditions and aesthetics of the buildings there were parallels in the images’ formal elements. Sub-consciously I had abstractly selected and framed the same images.
There were the components of potential artworks. Pairing images, I began post-production for a series of diptychs which were the basis for subsequent works informed by composition, color, pattern, texture, contrast and perhaps irony in architecture. My most recent works introduce and dramatize elements of light, spatial depth, time and ambiguity.
